Finding Home Improvement Grants

If you need to make repairs or renovations to your home but cannot afford them, there are ways to get the money you need. In addition to home improvement loans, there are home improvement grants that can help homeowners on a strict budget. The great thing about grants is that they don't have to be repaid.

Many of the grant programs out there are funded by the government. For example, the USDA offers Rural Development Housing and Community Facilities Program grants and loans. Whether or not you will qualify for a grant and how much you can qualify for will depend on several different factors. One of them is of course, your income. You will be required to provide proof of income in the form of tax refunds, paycheck stubs or both.

Not only can home improvement grants help you make necessary repairs and renovations, there are also grants that can help prospective homeowners purchase their first home. But what if you don't live in a rural area? There are many different home improvement grant plans that are funded by municipal localities. To find out more about them, consult with your municipal building. You may also want to make an appointment with your local Social Services or Salvation Army. These organizations work with the community to provide crucial repairs for homeowners who cannot afford them. Like with USDA grants and loans, you'll be required to verify your income.

Another place to check is with your local HUD office. HUD stands for Housing and Urban Development, and they offer many programs for low income families. There are grants for repairs, low income housing, and even vouchers that can help families pay for their rent or mortgage.

There are many different types of repairs and improvements that grants can cover. If what you want to do is purely cosmetic in nature, it might not qualify. However, if it's important to your health and safety, then you've got a good chance. If you've got a roof that's leaking or falling apart, that's one example. Other things may include updating the plumbing or renovating structures that may not be secure or appropriate for families. Heating and cooling problems are also considered urgent issues that may qualify under home improvement grants.
